The Case of Charles Dexter Ward: Review
In "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," a young man from a distinguished Rhode Island family mysteriously disappears from a mental asylum. Charles had been confined due to a prolonged period of insanity, during which he displayed peculiar and unexplained physical changes. As the story unfolds, the focus shifts to the investigation led by the family doctor, Marinus Bicknell Willett. Determined to uncover the reason behind Charles' madness and physical transformations, Willett embarks on a journey that unravels a dark family secret.
Willett delves into the legends surrounding Charles' ancestor, Joseph Curwen, an eighteenth-century shipping entrepreneur believed to be an alchemist. However, Willett's discoveries reveal that Curwen was not merely an alchemist but a necromancer and mass murderer. During a raid on Curwen's farm, witnesses encountered incantations, lights, explosions, and indescribable figures. Bound by secrecy, the raiders ensured that no one would speak of what they had witnessed.
As Willett continues to investigate, he learns that Charles had been attempting to locate Curwen's grave. Astonishingly, Charles had acquired Curwen's ashes and used ancient magical formulae to resurrect him. Curwen, bearing a striking resemblance to Charles, murders his descendant and assumes his identity, all while indulging in his sinister practices. However, Curwen's archaic mindset and behavior ultimately lead to his institutionalization as authorities deem him insane.
During his investigation, Willett traces Charles' footsteps to a bungalow in Pawtuxet Village, which Charles had purchased under Curwen's influence. Unbeknownst to Charles, the house is built atop Curwen's former headquarters, a sprawling catacomb. As Willett navigates the labyrinthine catacombs, he encounters a grotesque monster lurking in a pit, unveiling the horrific truth about Curwen's crimes. In addition, Willett discovers that Curwen had conspired with other necromancers, fellow survivors from his previous life, to obtain knowledge from the world's most brilliant minds and pose a grave threat to humanity.
Amidst his exploration of Curwen's laboratory, Willett inadvertently summons an ancient entity, a foe of Curwen and his necromancer allies. Overwhelmed, Willett loses consciousness, only to wake up later in the bungalow. The entrance to the catacombs has been sealed, erasing any evidence of their existence, but Willett finds a note written in Latin. The message instructs him to eliminate Curwen and destroy his body. Determined to thwart Curwen's plans, Willett confronts him at the asylum and successfully reverses the resurrection spell, reducing Curwen to dust.
The aftermath of Curwen's demise is marked by tragic deaths and the destruction of his co-conspirators' dwellings. News reports emerge, shedding light on the brutality inflicted upon Curwen's accomplices and the eradication of their lairs. It becomes evident that the world has been saved from the clutches of darkness and that the future of mankind is once again secure.
